アマンダはここに生きている

　月の見えなくなった夜空を、アマンダは、ふりあおいだ。闇だけが見えた。グレイハウンドの長距離バスを改造した巡業用のこのバスは、運転台のルーフが大きくガラス張りになっていた。改造に当たってアマンダがここだけ特別に注文をつけ、ガラス張りにしてもらった。
　ダッシュボードにならんでいるいくつかの計器盤の明かりが、運転台をほのかにひたしていた。まもなく真夜中になるこの時間、アマンダはひとり運転台にすわり、バスを運転していた。明け方の六時に、次の町に着く。それまで、アマンダがぶっとおしで運転する。一年のうち三百日ちかくは、こうしてハイウェイに出づっぱりの生活だ。そして、そのような生活をもう二十年以上、つづけてきた。
